Utility & Service Setup Guide: Flathead & Lake County
Use this guide to set up service in your name before closing. Call or go online 1–2 weeks ahead and ask for service to start on your closing or possession date. Providers depend on the exact address, so always confirm with the provider before assuming coverage. Inside city limits, water, sewer and garbage usually come from the city; out in the county you'll typically have a private well, septic system and a county green box or private hauler instead.
Flathead County: Electric
Nearly all of Flathead County is served by Flathead Electric Cooperative, a member-owned co-op; you'll fill out a membership application to start service.

Flathead County: Natural gas & propane
NorthWestern Energy is the natural gas utility in the valley's towns (Kalispell, Whitefish, Columbia Falls, Bigfork, Evergreen, Lakeside and parts of the canyon). Rural homes that use gas without a gas main will use propane. Ask whether the propane tank is owned or leased: a leased tank can only be filled by the company that owns it.

Flathead County: Water & sewer
In town, water and sewer are billed by the city or a county water and sewer district. Homes outside those boundaries usually have a private well and septic system, so there is no account to set up.
Not sure if a property is in a district? Flathead County GIS publishes a water and sewer district map (maps.flatheadcounty.gov). Some subdivisions also have their own small water company or HOA water system; check the seller's disclosure or title report, or ask us!

Flathead County: Garbage & recycling
Every Flathead County property pays an annual solid waste assessment on its tax bill, which covers free drop-off of bagged household trash at county container ("green box") sites. In Kalispell and Whitefish, curbside pickup is billed by the city; everywhere else, buyers either use a county site or hire a private hauler. Household recycling (cardboard, paper, aluminum) is accepted at the landfill and the Bigfork, Columbia Falls, Creston, Lakeside and Somers container sites.
